2. Clean your gutters

With so many mature trees throughout Suffolk and the surrounding area, gutters fill up fast. Clogged gutters in a fall rainstorm can send water where you don't want it — toward your foundation. Clear them now, before the leaves really start falling.

3. Inspect your roof

Look for missing or damaged shingles, especially after any summer storms. A small roof issue caught in the fall is a repair. The same issue ignored until a winter storm can become a much bigger, much more expensive problem.

4. Seal gaps and drafts

Check around windows, doors, and any exterior penetrations (like where cable or plumbing lines enter your home) for gaps. Sealing these up keeps your energy bills down and keeps unwanted moisture and pests out.

5. Test your fireplace and chimney

If you have a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned before you use it for the first time this season. This is a safety issue as much as a maintenance one.

6. Look at your exterior drainage
