Switching Brokerages Is Easier Than You Think
The hassle of switching keeps a lot of good agents in the wrong place. Here’s what moving actually involves, in plain English, and how I help make it smooth.
What Switching Actually Takes
Read your current agreement
Look for your notice period, who keeps active listings and pending deals, any fees after you leave and referral or non-solicitation terms. Knowing this first keeps everything clean.
Plan your timing
Many agents move between closings or right after a big one. With pendings, decide whether they close under your current brokerage and talk with your broker before you announce.
Transfer your license
Each state or province handles this through its real estate commission or regulator. It’s usually a short online process, and Epique’s onboarding team walks you through it.
Update your memberships and access
Your MLS, association and lockbox accounts need your new brokerage information. A quick checklist covers it.
Refresh your marketing
- Email signature, business cards and digital card
- Website, social profiles and Google Business Profile
- Yard signs and listing materials
Set up your new tools and tell your people
Import your database into your new CRM, then let your clients and sphere know where to find you. Done well, a move is a great reason to reconnect.
How I Help You Make the Move

Switching Brokerages: Common Questions
Can I take my listings with me?
In most cases, listing agreements belong to the brokerage, not the agent. Some brokerages will release listings with the seller’s permission; others won’t. Check your agreement and plan the timing before you announce anything.
Will I still get paid on my pending deals?
Usually pending deals close under your current brokerage and you’re paid under your old agreement. The terms vary, so read your independent contractor agreement for anything about post-departure pay or fees.
How long does switching take?
The license transfer itself is often quick, but it depends on your state or province. Most of the time goes into planning: timing around pendings, updating your MLS and marketing, and setting up your new tools.
Will my clients notice?
Only if you tell them, and you should. A short, upbeat note about your move and what it means for them, usually more support, is great for your database.
